Associate Professor Loke Kah Yin is currently Senior Consultant and Head of the Paediatric Endocrinology Division at the Department of Paediatrics in NUHS/NUS.

He obtained his basic medical degree (MBBS) from NUS in 1984. From 1987 to 1989, he received his general paediatric training at NUH, which culminated in his postgraduate degree (Masters of Medicine in Paediatrics) in 1989. In 1990, A/Prof Loke joined NUS as teaching faculty, choosing Paediatric Endocrinology as his subspecialty.

He subsequently became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 1990, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 1998 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 2002. His specialist training in clinical paediatric endocrinology was undertaken at The Children’s Hospital, Sydney, from 1991 to 1992, under the tutelage of Professor Martin Silink and Dr Chris Cowell. This was followed by one year’s research training at the UCLA Medical Centre, Los Angeles, from 1992 to 1993, under the tutelage of Professor Barbara Lippe.

Following his overseas paediatric endocrine training, Dr Loke returned to NUH/NUS to establish the clinical, research and teaching arms of the Paediatric Endocrinology service at the Department of Paediatrics, NUH. Since 1993, he has remained Head of the Paediatric Endocrine Division, developing the clinical service of Paediatric Endocrinology which currently encompasses growth and pubertal disorders, thyroid, adrenal, pituitary disorders, disorders of sexual development and bone diseases.

Dr Loke has trained generations of medical students, paediatricians and paediatric endocrinologists, including all the Paediatric Endocrine consultants in his division and 11 Paediatric Endocrine Fellows from Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei and India. He receives international referrals from the ASEAN countries and further afield, from the UAE, Bangladesh and Nepal. He has been a member of the Asia Pacific Paediatric Endocrine Society (APPES) since its inception in 1999, serving as its secretary from 2000 to 2008. He has taught Paediatric Endocrine trainees at numerous APPES Fellows’ meetings, receiving the prestigious APPES teaching award in 2008.

His research interest is primarily in the genetics of adrenal disorders. Dr Loke obtained the Doctorate of Medicine for his Thesis on the Molecular Pathogenesis of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia and X-Linked Adrenal Hypoplasia Congenita in 2002. In recognition of his contribution to Paediatric Endocrinology, he was awarded the Singapore Youth Award in 2000 and the Haridas Gold Medal for Paediatric research in Singapore in 2001.
