Dr David Chen is a Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology at National University Hospital (NUH) and Alexandra Hospital. He is currently pursuing sub-specialty training in the field of complex cataract and refractive surgery. He performs small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), femtoLASIK, photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for myopia correction. He also performs PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision for presbyopia correction.
Dr Chen completed his undergraduate medical training at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2015. He was awarded the Dean’s List for his academic performance and invited to the Dean’s Dinner for his leadership qualities. He obtained his Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2019 and his specialist accreditation in 2021. During his residency training, Dr Chen served as the Chief Resident from 2019 to 2020, and joined the 7th Singapore Chief Residency Programme.
Dr Chen’s research interests include ophthalmic imaging, medical technology, and anterior segment surgeries (including cataract and glaucoma surgeries). He has been awarded the Junior Pitch For Fund grant in 2017, the NUH Clinician Scientist Program – Residency (NCSP-R) grant in 2018, National University Health System (NUHS) Innovation Grant in 2019, NUHS Seed Fund in 2020, and NUHS Summit Programme in Innovation in 2022. He aspires to be a clinician-innovator and has completed the Innovation Fellowship with the Singapore Biodesign programme, a competitive national level fellowship to further hone his knowledge in MedTech and healthcare innovation.
Dr Chen also conducts regular clinical teachings for medical students. He is a Clinical Lecturer at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and a Clinical Teacher at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He has also been a House Mentor for NUS Medicine since 2015, providing guidance to first year medical students and supporting their transition into college.
