Dr. Ian Tan is a Consultant in the Division of Colorectal Surgery, NUHS.
Dr. Tan attained his MBBS and graduated from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2011. He commenced his Residency in General Surgery immediately upon graduation in 2011 and became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2012. He went on to complete his Masters of Medicine (Surgery) in 2017.
Dr. Tan became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2019. He was also accorded Specialist Accreditation in General Surgery by the Ministry of Health, Singapore in the same year.
In 2021 – 2022, he completed a Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at the Queens Medical Center, Nottingham, United Kingdom (UK), which is one of the largest hospitals in the UK. There, he served as a Senior Colorectal Fellow under the tutelage of Professor Charles Maxwell-Armstrong, President of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI). During this time, he honed his skills in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery for both colorectal cancer as well as inflammatory bowel disease.
In addition to interests in Colon and Rectal Surgery, Dr. Tan is a keen educator, and is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education. He served as the Resident Convener for both the MBBS (Singapore) examination for surgery in 2016 and the MRCS (Edinburgh) examinations in 2015 and 2016. He currently holds the appointment of Clinical Lecturer and serves as part of the clinical faculty in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS).
He is also passionate about overseas surgical outreach, having been part of surgical missions to Indonesia, Burma and The Philippines. Dr. Tan also actively contributes to National Service (NS). He was awarded the One-Life-Saved Award during an overseas exercise in Brunei and was presented with the Chief of Army Coin Award in 2014. He currently serves as an officer in the Singapore Armed Forces Commandos.
