In 1996, Assistant Professor Winn Maung Maung Aye graduated with MB BCh BAO from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed his Basic Surgical Training in Dublin, Ireland and attained the Associate Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1998. His career in Cardiothoracic Surgery started at the National Heart Centre, Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin, Ireland in 1999. He returned to Singapore in 2000 and joined the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at National University Hospital. In November 2006, he was accorded Specialist Accreditation in Cardiothoracic Surgery by the Ministry of Health, Singapore and admitted as a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 2009.
Dr Maung was awarded with the Health Manpower Development Program from the Ministry of Health, Singapore and National University Hospital to specialize in congenital cardiac surgery. He completed two years of clinical fellowship in congenital cardiac surgery (adult and paediatric congenital cardiac surgery) at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHST Trust, London, United Kingdom. During his fellowship, he was involved in the management of many complex congenital (paediatric and adult) cardiac surgical patients. His aim is to further develop Congenital Cardiac Surgery services at National University Hospital. With this, he hopes for National University Heart Centre, Singapore to ultimately be the national and regional referral centre for Congenital Cardiac Surgery in Singapore.
In addition to his clinical work, he was also involved in various research projects. He was the Principal Investigator for a National Healthcare Group research project titled “Essential Hypertension, atherosclerosis and expression of nitric oxide synthase genes and sodium, potassium-ATPase genes in human arteries and Vein”. He was also involved in pioneering stem cells research projects in cardiac surgery. Currently, he is reviewing the long-term follow-up of patients who underwent Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery and received concurrent intra-myocardial stem cell injection. He also conducted various clinical reviews in congenital cardiac surgery at the Royal Brompton Hospital.
Dr Maung also has a keen interest in the medical undergraduate teaching programme. He was appointed as a Clinical Tutor in 2005 and is currently a Clinical Teacher at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
