Dr Kannan is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty interest in Foot and Ankle disorders.
He graduated with a MBBS from the National University of Singapore and underwent Advanced Specialty Training in Orthopedic surgery in Singapore. He obtained his postgraduate qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He was awarded the prestigious MOH Scholarship by the Ministry of Health (Singapore) to pursue further training in the field of lower limb reconstructive surgery with special emphasis on Foot and Ankle Reconstruction.
He underwent his subspecialty training in Switzerland and in the Netherlands where he trained in foot & ankle deformity correction, sports surgery and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) of the foot and ankle.
He is an active member of the following international societies:

His clinical expertise is in the following areas of foot & ankle surgery:
- Sports injuries, ligament injuries & tendinopathies
- Arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery for management of cartilage defects and impingement
- Forefoot deformity correction (Bunions and lesser toe deformities)
- Management of foot pain (metatarsalgia)
- Management of Diabetic foot ulcers, Charcot’s joints & wounds
Management of fractures around the foot & ankle - Correction of flatfeet & high arched feet
- Management of arthritis including Total Ankle Replacement and osteotomies
Dr Kannan has extensive experience in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery being one of a very small number of sub specialists in this area in Singapore & the region. He is well published with articles in international peer reviewed journals. His particular research interest is in cartilage regeneration and management of cartilage defects. He did the first successful case of artificial scaffold reconstruction in the ASEAN region for a talus osteochondral defect in 2013.
His passion for teaching has seen him being appointed as a clinical Senior Lecturer of the Yong Loo Ling School of Medicine, National University of Singapore involved in undergraduate medical education in Singapore. He is also a faculty member of the National Healthcare Group Residency program, involved in the teaching of Residents. He is also an International Faculty member of the AO trauma group where he has taught in China, India, Thailand and Singapore. He is also passionate in developing the Foot & Ankle specialty in the region and has conducted numerous courses and has been invited as chairperson and faculty to various F&A courses and symposiums in Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong.
Dr Kannan is also the principal supervisor of the Singapore Medical Council accredited Foot & Ankle Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship program in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He is also an appointed expert panel member of the Ministry of Health Singapore Diabetic Foot Workgroup Committee.
In his spare time, Dr Kannan enjoys playing football, cycling and travelling. He is also involved with community service and with nonprofit organisations in medical education and humanitarian work. He is married with 2 lovely daughters.
