
Dr Kua Hai Kiat Joshua

Dr Kua is a Psychiatrist. He did his basic and advanced psychiatric training from 1994 to 2001. In 2001, he received specialist accreditation in psychiatry. He completed sub-specialty training in geriatric psychiatry at St George’s Aged Psychiatry Service and psycho-oncology at Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Australia from 2002 to 2003. He was Chief of the Department of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Institute of Mental Health from 2008-2012. Besides pharmacotherapy, Dr Kua also incorporates psychological approaches in his management. He obtained his post-graduate diploma (with distinction) in psychotherapy (with his practicum on psychodynamic psychotherapy) at NUS in 2001. He also received post-training certification in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other psychological therapies.
He is currently also a visiting consultant and member of the Medical Advisory Board for Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) Dr Kua was in various ministry-level committees with MOH and MCYS. He was also involved in the development of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Benzodiazepines Prescription (2008) and Dementia (2011). In 2010, he was appointed by MCYS as Special Visitor for the Mental Capacity Act.He was previously Clinical Lecturer for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at NUS and Examiner for the Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) Examinations. In 2001, he won the research prize at the ASEAN Congress of Psychiatry Meeting. In 2012, he was awarded the Healthcare Humanity Award.
