Dr Ng graduated in medicine in 1997 from the University of Western Australia and following a training period that included military service, obtained his postgraduate qualifications in surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2002. He went on to obtain further qualifications from the National University of Singapore in 2003 and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2007. In 2008, Dr Ng completed an advanced colorectal surgery fellowship at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. There he learned the fine art of subspecialty colorectal surgery including laparoscopic colorectal resections, transanal endoscopic surgery and colonic stenting. Since his return, his passion has been in advancing the practice of minimally invasive surgery.
Dr Ng is well versed in a broad repertoire of minimally invasive surgical procedures. In addition to laparoscopic colorectal resections, his forte includes more advanced procedures such as robotic colorectal resection, single port laparoscopy, extended lymph node clearance for advanced colorectal cancer cancer, colonic stenting, transanal (scarless) endoscopic microsurgery and transanal total mesorectal excision.
He first trained in robotic colorectal surgery under various Korean surgeons, Prof Kim Seon Hahn and Prof Min Byung Soh in the technique in 2010. These days, he is a trainer and educator in robotic surgery, delivering regular lectures locally and internationally as well as performing hands-on proctoring for other surgeons. In Nov 2015, Dr Ng performed live demonstration of his robotic colorectal surgery technique at an international surgical conference, the ISLCRS (International Society of Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeons) 2015 Congress, a first for a Singaporean colorectal surgeon.
Since his return from his fellowship in 2008, Dr Ng has been performing colonic stenting as a means of reducing morbidity (complications) in the treatment of obstructed colon cancers. He has one of the largest, if not the largest personal case experience on the island. With this technique, Dr Ng has helped many patients with obstructed colon cancers to avoid stoma (bag) creation that has been traditionally necessary.
Dr Ng’s other clinical interest is in laparoscopic hernia repair, having also achieved international recognition with regular invitations to lecture and teach. He has also performed live demonstrations of his hernia repair technique locally and internationally at numerous surgical workshops and conferences.
Dr Ng is an active contributor to the worldwide body of medical knowledge, having authored numerous scientific publications on a wide range of topics including head & neck surgery, urology, general surgery, colorectal surgery and radiology.
While in SGH he served as Senior Consultant Surgeon and was also the Director of the Centre for Digestive and Liver Diseases, a large multidisciplinary coordinated clinical centre within Singapore General Hospital encompassing the breadth of gastroenterology, upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and colorectal surgery. He also held the position of vice-chair of the Robotic Minimally Invasive Surgery Committee, a steering group dedicated to the development and furtherance of robotic surgery.
Dr Ng has always believed that teaching in medicine is both a duty and an honour. In recognition of his academic efforts, he was awarded an adjunct professorial title since 2011. He continues to teach students and surgical trainees with passion.
