Associate Professor Shamira Perera qualified from University of London, with a BSc(hons) in Biochemistry First Class honours (1994) and MBBS(hons) in 1997.  Following 2 fellowships he came to Singapore in 2008.

Elected as Vice Chair of the Junior Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in 2006, Associate Professor Perera has a longstanding commitment to training. In 2010, he won the Best Teacher/Mentor award at SNEC and the RiSE Faculty Appreciation Award in 2015. In 2015, in conjunction with Touch Surgery (www.touchsurgery.com) he co-authored a Golden Apple award winning, free app module to teach and test cataract and glaucoma surgery.

In 2015, he formed part of a group that won the Institute of Engineers Singapore- Prestigious Engineering award, and another: the AHIP-GEM 2017 Award. He was conferred the AAO and APAO achievement awards in 2015 and 2016 respectively to reward his research work.  Supported by competitive research grants totalling over S$1.5M, his core work has yielded 8 patents. Associate Professor Perera has been an invited lecturer for over 80 conferences, written 5 book chapters and >100 peer reviewed publications. His role to promote commercialisation across all specialties at SingHealth includes him presiding over grant awarding bodies aimed at innovation which disburse over $5M per year.
