Dr R E Stanley was Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery) at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) prior to setting up his own private practice in 1995 at Gleneagles Medical Centre. He was also honoured as Visiting Professor in Stanford University Medical Centre, Palo – Alto, California, USA in 1993.

Today, he is the Senior Consultant ENT/Head and Neck Surgeon and Director of Stanley Ear, Nose, Throat & Sinus Centre at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore, which provides comprehensive management of ENT, allergy and snoring-related conditions in both Adults and Children. Advanced Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for difficult sinus/skull base lesions are also performed.

An alumnus of the University of Singapore, Dr Stanley graduated in 1978 with an MBBS degree. Subsequently he went to on to earn the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Edinburgh in 1982, specialising in Ear Nose and Throat Surgery. While there, he was attached to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on a Singapore Government Scholarship.

He then returned to practice at the Singapore General Hospital before leaving again in 1987 on another scholarship for advanced training to sub-specialize in Head & Neck Surgery at Guys & Royal Marsden Hospital, Royal National Throat Ear and Nose Hospital, University College London, United Kingdom.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Allergy-related ENT diseases were two subspecialty interests, which he developed in the course of his training and practice of Otorhinolaryngology.

Dr Stanley then went on to set up an Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Laboratory with comprehensive facilities for the training of younger surgeons in this specialized field in Singapore General Hospital. He also spearheaded the development of Head, Neck and Surgery and Advanced Endoscopic Sinus Surgery in the ENT Department (SGH).

His other contributions have been in the development of a Comprehensive Voice Laboratory and clinic at Singapore General Hospital leading to a successful Post-Laryngectomy Voice Restoration Program, while he was the Head of the Department at SGH.

Dr Stanley has lectured extensively internationally. He was honoured as International Guest Speaker at the Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgeon Update in 1994 organised by the Canadian Society of Otorhinolaryngology in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. He also organised and directed an Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Course in Ho Chi Minh City and has been guest lecturer in Myanmar, Brunei and Western Australia. In addition to organising courses, Dr Stanley performed live Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for demonstration at the Ho Chi Min City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

In 2001, he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. Dr Stanley is also a Member of the American Rhinologic Society and the American Society for Head & Neck Surgery.

In the academic area, Dr Stanley has authored and co-authored numerous papers in both local and international journals. He also wrote a chapter in a book “Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma”. He continues to lecture on numerous CME programs in Singapore and has been invited as guest speaker in Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei and Western Australia.

In the area of community service, Dr Stanley has worn different hats. He is a Rotarian, and is a past president of the Rotary Club of Jurong Town. From 1998 to 2000, he served on the COMPASS Committee (Community and Parents in Support of Schools) with the Ministry of Education. He is also one of the experts for the mediation service at the Primary Dispute Resolution Centre, Subordinate Courts Singapore.

As a member of the Eurasian Association, Dr Stanley was appointed to serve with their Fund Raising Panel from December 2008 to April 2010.

Besides his community work, Dr Stanley is an avid golfer, watch enthusiast, and collector of fine writing instruments.
